About Me
I am Xuyang Chen, a senior undergraduate at the University of California, Davis, pursuing a B.S. in Applied Physics and Computer Science (expected June 2026). My research lies at the intersection of physics-informed machine learning, natural language processing, and affective computing, with a focus on developing AI systems that are both scientifically grounded and human-centered.
I have completed the MITx MicroMasters in Statistics and Data Science and trained at the Harvard ML Research Bootcamp under Professor Pavlos Protopapas at the Harvard Institute for Applied Computational Science (IACS). My published work includes a paper on physics-informed neural networks in IEEE Xplore (CSCI 2024), and I have a manuscript under review at ACM CHI 2026 on affective modeling with large language models.
Research Interests
My research spans multiple domains in AI and computational science. I am particularly interested in:
Physics-Informed Machine Learning — Integrating physical laws and domain constraints into neural network architectures to solve partial differential equations and scientific computing problems with improved accuracy and generalization.
Affective Computing & HCI — Developing emotion-aware AI systems that dynamically adapt to user affect, with applications in interactive narrative systems and therapeutic technologies.
Explainable AI & Interpretability — Applying techniques like Grad-CAM and uncertainty quantification to make deep learning models more transparent, trustworthy, and actionable for real-world decision-making.
Agentic AI & NLP — Building autonomous AI pipelines that combine large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, and multi-step reasoning for complex real-world tasks such as document verification and compliance automation.
Experience
Research Assistant — AI Narrative Systems & NLP
University of California, Davis · Jun 2025 – Present
Designing emotion-aware AI narrative systems that adapt storytelling based on user affect, contributing to a paper under review at CHI 2026. Benchmarked 6+ deep learning architectures (LSTM, CNN, Transformer, ResNet, InceptionTime, LSTM-FCN) for time series classification. Implemented Grad-CAM for temporal interpretability and collaborated with faculty on experimental design and manuscript preparation for top-tier HCI venues.
AI Engineer Intern
